Today it’s all about Harley Quinn… Harley Quinn the one who once used to be the Joker’s Psychotherapist, fell massively in love with him and became a total nutcase. She is probably best known as the female femme fatale from the movie the Suicide Squad.
Here are Explore Your Dark Side’s top 9 Leadership Lessons learnt form Harley Quinn.
1 Never loose your swag
As a leader we are asked to make the tough calls. We don’t need leaders and leadership when things work out fine and according to a well drafted plan and actions in the right direction. However, we need real leaders when things do not go according to plan or if the plan is crap. Leadership therefore is a responsibility – not a privilege.
The remarkable leaders are the ones who are in charge, take full responsibility and still don’t loose their swag. They get out there and are great role models – rather than hiding behind their employees. Just like Harley Quinn when she gets ready to give the other bad guys a proper slap. And how cool is that chewing gum? Total swag.
2 Unplug and embrace the moment
After the Suicide Squad has saved the planet and successfully finished the project, they get asked what privileges they’d liked as they have to remain locked up. Harley answers she wants this fancy espresso machine. This is how we find her in her cell shortly after. Totally unplugged, with a book and enjoying her coffee.
As a leader, especially one who is in charge, takes responsibility and is visible, it’s important we unplug from time to time and embrace a healthy work-life-balance. However this looks for you… find things you can fully immerse yourself into and switch off all the thoughts of the office. This could be done as a proper holiday with your mobile on flight mode (yes, your employees and company will function fine without you for 2 weeks) or with a calming evening routine. Or whatever works for you! Your swag, your sanity, your mindfulness.
3 Explain your behaviour to reduce uncertainty and unpredictability to build trust
I get it. We often think that being unpredictable and out of reach for our employees adds to the mystery and we will be more efficient. It’s not. In fact, it’s totally bollocks. New research has found that
Absentee Leadership is the most common type of incompetent leader – Scott Gregory, CEO of Hogan Assessments
So, don’t be the leader who is out of reach or simply absent when things get rough. I get back to the last point: leadership is a responsibly! Take it – or leave it. Every leaders needs followers, therefore it’s totally OK if you don’t want to be responsible. But then stay out of the leadership game. Quite simple, right?
Oh, btw Explore Your Dark Side founder Stephanie Bosch is a certified user of Hogan Assessments. So, if you fancy to explore your own dark side with a Hogan Assessment, get in touch. – I obviously needed to through in a quick pitch. Let’s move on.
4 Have fun and enjoy the challenge
As you kept reading, I assume you are not offended by my frank comment on taking on the responsibility that comes with leadership or else get out of the game.
Therefore, if you do get in for the challenge why not have some fun along the way? The great thing in work life is – most corporate challenges aren’t involving death, right?
5 Get ready to get your hands dirty
Leadership is not about telling people where to go or what needs to be done, but to get in the game and get your hands dirty. Yes, you are a leader and your job is to make sure things go smoothly and your employees have someone to turn to. Nevertheless, when things get rough and nasty you want to get involved and leave your fancy glass office. Btw. that might be even a great idea to join your team from time to time because most people think sales leaders can’t really sell etc.
Ready to prove that you’re right for the job and earned the title?
6 Stay fit and work out on a regular basis
I would have said ‘a healthy mind lives in a healthy body’ – not too sure the thing with the healthy mind is so suitable in this case though… anyways…you know it: workouts are important.
7 First impression counts – make it an appearance
You’re the new one? Great! Make it a lasting, impressing first impression! Especially women in a male dominated leadership environment: YES, we deserve being there. We deserve being seen and we belong there as much as our male equivalence. No reason to shy away.
8 It will get rough – keep going!
Leadership and the day to day life of a leader might get rough some time… take a deep breath and keep going. That’s why you have your times off and your regular workout schedule. (How nicely this all fits together…)
And finally our last leadership lesson from Harley Quinn:
9 Great leaders are fully committed
Because being a leader is who we are. That's what we do.
